Attitude the key to winning games says Hesketh

Rochdale Hornets forward Adam Hesketh says attitude is the key to winning games this season in the Betfred League 1 competition as the side prepare for Coventry Bears away this Sunday.

Matt Calland’s squad head into the weekend following a 43-36 victory over Keighley Cougars at Cougar Park in round three of the Betfred League 1, holding off a late comeback threat from the home side despite Hornets going down to 15 players at half-time due to injuries to Gavin Bennion and Zac Baker.

The squad travel to Butts Park Arena this Sunday, May 30, for the third away trip out of six on the road.

Hesketh said: “I was chuffed with the performance last weekend from all the lads. We had to keep at it for the full 80 minutes and credit to Keighley who never gave up throughout.

“There are still plenty of things to work on and we know that, but there were a lot of positives to take away in the end. There was a lot of very sore bodies in the end but the win made it all worth it.

“We know that we can’t take any games for granted and anyone can beat anyone this season all depending on attitude and how we turn up, so we have another tough away fixture now and a long travel time but I’m sure all the lads can’t wait to go again.”

Last Sunday’s fixture saw Hornets play in front of a crowd for the first time since March 2020, with travelling supporters backing Hornets until the final whistle in what was a tense finish to the game, while fans are permitted to travel again this Sunday to the Midlands.

“Honestly it was even better than I expected having fans watching last Sunday,” said Hesketh.

“Big thanks to all the Rochdale fans that made the trip away and it means a lot to all the lads. The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone made a comment on that.

“I think the team is improving week on week and before long we should be firing on all fronts. We want to be winning every game and we believe we can beat anyone in this league on our day but to do that we have to be at our best week in week out.”
