Sam Brazier named new Rochdale Hornets captain

We are excited to announce that Sam Brazier has been named the new club captain of Rochdale Hornets women ahead of the 2026 season.
Brazier takes on the role following the season-long injury sustained by Coral O'Keefe in September's play-off final victory over Rochdale Mayfield. The club will continue to support O'Keefe through her rehabilitation, and hope to see her on the sidelines soon right behind the team, demonstrating her outstanding leadership and team ethics.
Having started her rugby league career at Hornets, Sam has since gone on to play for Bradford Bulls and more recently in Super League with Leigh Leopards. Following a number of dual-registration appearances in 2025, Sam has re-joined the Hornets permanently for the 2026 season.
Demonstrating a high level of performance and leadership throughout her time at Hornets, the club moved quickly to tie the 33-year-old down to a permanent deal back in October.
On the captaincy, Brazier said: “I’m absolutely made up be appointed captain this season. Hornets is where I started my rugby league journey and to be able to lead the girls out this year is something special.
“Last year was a massive success for the club as a whole, going unbeaten all season and being promoted. Last years captain Coral, who unfortunately suffered a serious injury in the final set the foundations for the team and has given me some big boots to fill taking over.
“The girls that have come in the season have strengthened an already solid squad, this year is about competing in league 1 and putting rochdale on the map. I want to set a positive example to the young girls playing rugby league and show them what we have to offer!”
Rochdale Hornets womens head coach Ben Bird said: “I personally like a captain that leads by example, someone who is willing to make sacrifices and take on the burden for team mates. Coral O'Keefe optimised that last year but sadly sustained a serious knee injury in the final that threatens to keep her on the sidelines for a long-period. So we're lucky to have Sam who is that lead-by-example figure within the squad. She's capable of scoring a full length try but she will always do the hard yards and have team mates backs for 80 minutes.
“Players love to play alongside Sam, her communication is second to none and she, alongside a group of leaders within the squad are key to us looking to develop our younger players.”
