Hornets sign Spencer-Tonks on initial loan deal from Whitehaven

Rochdale Hornets are delighted to announce the signing of middle forward Daniel Spencer-Tonks from Whitehaven on an initial loan.
Spencer-Tonks arrives at Rochdale from the Championship side, who he joined in December from Salford Red Devils.
The 28-year-old predominantly featured at reserve grade for the Red Devils, but he made his Super League debut against Warrington Wolves towards the end of the 2022 season.
The powerful middle forward has struggled for game time this campaign - only started two league matches - but he scored twice in the Cumbrian outfit's 14-12 win at York RLFC.
Speaking on joining Hornets on an initial loan deal, Spencer-Tonks said: "I'm looking forward to getting stuck in with the team, getting some wins and moving Rochdale up the table.
"I've looked at the upcoming fixtures and believe there is a real opportunity to be picking up two points in matches - I'm looking forward to it."
Hornets have been hit with injuries in the forwards pack in recent weeks, with a number of payers on the treatment table.
AJ Boardman (abdominal), Ben Killan (hamstring), Zac Braham (ankle) are all struggling with injuries, and head coach Gary Thornton believes Spencer-Tonks will provide much needed cover.
He said: "It's a good time for Dan to come in as he will provide some much needed cover in the middle unit.
"Dan was impressive in his Super League debut for Salford, and has performed well at Whitehaven, so I'm really pleased he's joining us in a period where we need to get some wins under our belt to build confidence within the group.
"He's a tough defender who carries the ball well, so he will be a welcomed addition to the squad."
As part of the deal, which brings Spencer-Tonks to the Crown Oil Arena, Sam Haynes joins joins Whitehaven on an initial month loan.
Hornets chairman Andy Mazey has echoed the positivity on the arrival of Spencer-Tonks, he said: "Dan is an explosive middle unit who came highly recommended to us in the close season and Gary really liked the look of it.
"He made an impression last year in the Super League reserves competition with Salford, where he also made his Super League debut.
"We held talks with Dan but he decided to take up the opportunity in the Championship at Whitehaven, however, we are delighted to have negotiated a deal that will benefit all parties.
"Hopefully Sam can go and get some game time at Whitehaven, and do well."
