Andy Clarke: 'I’m certain we will finish a lot stronger than we have started'

Rochdale Hornets utility back Andy Clarke sat down to speak about playing both codes, early life at the club and aims for the rest of the season.

Clarke, who signed his first professional contract with Rochdale in November, has impressed so far this campaign, which includes two tries in Hornets' 32-24 win at Midlands Hurricanes.

Despite playing rugby league since a young age, the 24-year-old, who joined from amateur club Halton Farnworth Hornets, has previously played union for local side Widnes.

Speaking on his participation in both codes, Clarke said: "I’ve always played league since I was six, however, in recent years have been playing union in the off-season to keep myself match fit.

"Grasping some of the union rules at first was difficult but the more I played the more I understood. That being said though, I still didn’t know them all - I just winged it."

Away from the pitch, Clarke has recently started CrossFit sessions and going on hikes, while on the pitch he has played a vital role in creating a number of tries.

“Signing for Hornets has been a great move so far, I’m really enjoying my first few months here," Clarke said.

"I'm challenging myself at a higher level, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, gaining more knowledge and experience weekly and playing some good minutes on the pitch.

"Hopefully, I can keep improving my game at pro-level and if I continue this I’d like to think I can put my name in the 1-17 weekly."

The utility back, who can cover all the outside back positions and fullback, is one of many new additions head coach Gary Thornton acquired for the 2023 season.

Despite the difficulties of joining a new team, Clarke admitted early team bonding sessions helped him settle in and feel part of the group.

He said: “I personally take time to adjust to new surroundings and meeting new people, but I’ve found every person in the squad has been more than helpful and welcoming.

"Team bonding days are always a plus, and having a Christmas night out and curry nights just before pre-season started helped get to know individuals away from rugby.

"We are a young group so the banter around the camp is always a good laugh - all the lads and staff get on really well."

Despite a tough start to the season for Hornets, which has seen two defeats - against promotion favourites Doncaster and Dewsbury Rams - from three matches, Clarke is confident results will change.

Rochdale travel to local rivals Oldham on Good Friday, before another tough test at home to Workington Town, who were relegated from the Championship last season.

"The start to the season hasn’t been plain sailing," Clarke admitted.

"However, we have shown some good rugby and I guarantee there’s lots more to come from this group. We are working extremely hard in training to put things right in the coming weeks, and I can ensure we will.

"We have a great bunch of lads, and with Gary and the coaching staffs help and guidance, I’m certain we will finish a lot stronger than we have started.

"I’m hoping to continue my form and add a few more tries along the way, and hopefully help get this team into the play-offs come the end of the season."

Rochdale Hornets are next in action at the Crown Oil Arena on 16 April, when we take on Workington Town.
